About Relative Magazine
In 2007 Charles Landry resided in Perth to compile a report imparting his recommendations on urban innovation. Landry noted that entrepreneurial creativity and variety are fundamental components in order to bring about positive change. Perhaps more than any other time in our recent history, we need a new medium, one that can actively promote and build upon those shared passions and talents that bind us together as creative Western Australians. It is a strong belief of ours that the creative industries have a responsibility to leave a beneficial legacy to the community. They have the power to bring about social and environmental change in a highly influential and non-destructive manner.
With our combined skill sets and the support we have already received in the projects infancy we can create a medium that will contribute to cultural engagement by bridging the gap between artists and the wider community.
Relative is about creating a place for people to project their passions and in turn inject passion into the place they live; Western Australia.
Relative aspires to build upon our cultural fabric, encourage creativity and stimulate the growth and unity of the community. Through positive reinforcement the publication focuses on the personal growth and development of creative individuals. Relative is a support mechanism that recognises, celebrates, promotes and supports creative Western Australians.
Relative is a Western Australian based independent publication that connects people with the subculture they love. Our aim is to promote not only professional artists but provide an outlet for individuals who create quality work of which they would like to share with the greater community. The broad content structure affords individuals from various backgrounds the opportunity to promote their talents and share their experiences. The content within the magazine consists entirely of Western Australian artists.
Relative has drawn upon certain principals from the social networking structure (facebook, myspace) in developing the autonomous business model employed by the organization to be consistent with the vision of connecting people with the subculture they love. These particular networks are designed for communities of people who share similar interests and activities or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Careful consideration has been taken in our approach to creating a system that affords the same opportunity to all Western Australian artists/creatives to both contribute to the publication as well as the readership with regard to consumption of the content. One of the unique strengths the Relative online submission model affords to young people who create quality work is the opportunity to promote their talents to the wider community regardless of their geographical residency/location.
The magazine contains 64 pages, strategically utilizes a DL landscape format to complement innovative distribution tactics and is printed on 140gsm uncoated stock for the text with a 250gsm stock matt laminated for the cover. The finished product is perfect bound. The magazine is selectively distributed throughout the state to show predominantly young Western Australians from both the city and regional audiences the diversity of artistic experiences that are taking place in our state.
Our pricing strategy entices trial by eliminating the price barrier; hence affording every single Western Australian the opportunity to consume the magazine. The entirety of the magazine is available for consumption online, also free of charge. Regular events are held to give the community a forum to celebrate art, creativity - namely the community’s young creative talent, socialise and network. Invitation for the party is open to everyone with an open and creative mindset.
We hope you enjoy the fruits of Western Australia’s creative talent.
